Project Description

This project will largely focus upon the development of ‘clack chemistry’: the novel combination of RAFT chemistry with the hetero Diels-Alder cycloaddition as a synthetic tool to achieve complex macromolecular architectures. Furthermore, the utilization of this technology, and other efficient chemical transformations, with living free radical polymerization will be investigated with the aim of developing novel polymeric materials destined for such biomedical applications as drug delivery.

Project Description

high resolution soft-ionisation mass spectrometry of synthetic polymers: An in-depth study of polymer formation processes.

The proposed project aims to increase understanding of initiation pathways in free radical polymerization. Initially, the project will commence with studies into photo-initiation, where the mechanisms of polymerization will be determined by identification of products via pulsed laser polymerization (PLP). The synthesized oligomeric products will be analyzed via electro-spray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), which provides a highly accurate method of identifying the species present.

Studies into the effects of temperature, frequency as well as initiator type and concentrations will provide kinetic information which can subsequently be employed for targeted polymer synthesis with known functional end groups. Knowledge of such detailed information about initiation processes has many possible applications in industrial polymer production, where reaction kinetics are an important aspect of large scale manufacture. Judicious initiator choice can also reduce the number of purification steps required to obtain a desired product.

The project will also include the in-depth study of alternative initiation pathways via high resolution soft ionization mass spectrometry (e.g. redox initiation and peroxide initiation).

Project Description

The aim of my project is to establish a range of highly innovative protocols for the design of core-shell microspheres that will find application in a range of biotechnological and medical applications. The synthesis of core-shell microspheres will be done using ‘Grafting from’ and ‘Grafting on’ approaches in conjunction with living radical methodologies to tailor the microspheres' surface properties. For the first time surface functionalization of microsphere is done using a combination of raft and hetero diels-alder chemistry. to characterize these core-shell microspheres a range of new RAFT agents will be synthesized which will have cage ligand and hence can couple with radioactive metal ions.  The characterization of these surface functionalized microspheres will be carried out using Solid state NMR (analytical centre, unsw, sydney and max planck institute of polymer research, mainz), fluorescence and radiolabelling (australian nuclear science and technology organization) techniques.

Project Description

The focus of my project is to synthesise new acrylate-type macromonomers via the high-temperature radical polymerization where unsaturated oligomers are directly obtained without the addition of a control agent. a large variety of acrylate monomers are available to generate macromonomers. The aim is to use these endfunctionalized oligomers as starting material in the synthesis of complex molecular architectures such as brush, comb or star polymers.
During the project I also try to achieve a better understanding of the reaction kinetics and the reaction mechanism in general. Therefore, experiments with various radical initiators at different concentrations are carried out to assess the influence of the initiator on the reaction speed and the microstructure of the product.
